Tribute To Wayne Stilling
, Q.C.
MEDIATOR, COLLABORATIVE LAW PROFESSIONAL
This is a tribute to our dear friend Wayne Stilling, Q.C., who passed away on February 15, 2013.
Wayne was one of the pioneers of ADR in British Columbia. He was referred to as one of the “Province’s most highly regarded family mediators” by Mediate BC Society.
Wayne had a strong passion for family law since 1975, with an emphasis on the best interests of children. In 1979, Wayne was appointed as Family Advocate by the Attorney General of BC. Since that time, Wayne represented many children in contested court proceedings in all levels of court in BC. Throughout Wayne’s career, he continued to focus on the best interests of children and reaching resolutions through consensus rather than litigation.
Wayne obtained his qualifications as a Family law Mediator in 1985, long before the concept of Mediation had gained popularity. Since that time, Wayne was instrumental in shifting the focus in family law matters from litigation to alternative forms of dispute resolution, including Mediation and Collaborative law.
Wayne was a Bencher of the Law Society of British Columbia in 1989. In 1990, Wayne was recognized for his dedication and commitment to the legal profession when he received the designation of Queen’s Counsel from the Attorney General.
Wayne participated extensively in public and professional service, serving on several boards. This included the Surrey Foundation, the Children of the Street Society, the Lower Mainland St. Leonard’s Society and all levels of amateur sport. Wayne was a director of the Mediate BC Society Board and also chaired the Roster committee.
Wayne’s true passion was his wife, Rose, adult daughters Kristyn and Carly, their cockapoo, Harley and a large circle of friends.
Wayne has been a mentor and close friend of Carol’s for many years. Wayne planned on joining Carol at West Coast ADR in January 2013.
Wayne’s bright smile, incredible personality and passion for children and families will truly be missed. Thank you Wayne for your commitment and dedication to the legal practice, especially your passion for Mediation and ADR.
